| Gungie, you have reminded me mate , while at big daves i noticed that your heat exchanger surround was loose, not how it had been tightened onto the car by the heads but just the exchanger bit bit, go under and grab your heat exchangers and give them a wiggle, i reckon its this mate !
thats prob the knocking thru vibration

| I noticed the heat exchanger at Daves also, but its not a rattle, its a heavy knock that you can feel (which I am concerned about, however the engine runs really nice. its very confusing!!)
I personally think its either blowing where it attaches to the the engine at the top rear, or an engine bolt is not tight.

| Definately not misfiring or a slight rattle for engine ancillaries being loose, the engine itself sounds sweet, but as Gungie said its a very definate knock its not a regular or patterned sound tis very wierd, I would defo look at the engine bolts or gear box mounts as it resinates through the boot floor when inside the car.
I am glad we discovered the fubared diaphram on the carb when we did as that could of ended in disaterous results.

| Thanks Guys, couldnt have done it without a lot of help from you guys.
I will post up later, but I still maybe in the Mazda if I cant find out what the knocking noise is when its sat ticking over. Its not constant, not the engine so who knows.
I will check the engine bolts tonight and the front gear box mount. The flywheel did come off which is not concerning me!! I am sure everything was buttoned up tight (but then I was sure about some other bits I thought I had tightened also!!!)
It failed the test on a few things which I was able to do at the MOT station.

could the knock be the exhaust hitting on the body??

No I don't think so it sounds like a heavy dull knocking sound somewhere in front of the engine under the boot floor, it really is weird.

| Investigation starts tonight at 7pm tonight (it may not be a job for the faint hearted!! ) lol
I will also check the heads.
I will get it jacked up and shuffle underneath to see what gives.
Dave, I found your small hand lamp snuggled in by the master cylinder if you were wondering where it went!! lol.
