PostSubject: Rons Resto   Rons Resto EmptyMon Nov 03, 2008 5:57 pm

I bought Ron, a 1964 1200 deluxe sedan with a genuine 46'000 miles earlier this year.

When I bought him I decided that I would run him for the show season, then if I decided to keep him he'd get a resto over the winter ready for next year.

I had to sort out a few things with him ( Lowered with a 5" narrowed beam, wheels, rack and a few bits and bobs ) so I was happy to use him this year.

This is how he looked when I bought him.

This is how he looked this season.

Now, I am not the worlds fastest worker, so at times this thread could go a little slow. But I am going to do a full body off resto with loads of pics so in the end we should end up with a reasonable thread.

Here we go...

This is the main reason for the resto, he was just starting to get ereas of rust which I didn't want to get any worse.

Luckly the normal bad areas are very good.

In 1961 the 1200cc motor changed from

36 hp (SAE) 30 hp (DIN)

to

40 hp (SAE) 34 hp (DIN)

DIN = USA

DIN = euro

I need all I can get... lol!

I think it depends on if you would like to keep the og paint.

I have just been using a 1" paint scraper, but I have seen guys that steam clean it off.

The og underseal on early bugs is very brittle when cold so just chips away.

Thats exactly what I found the og underseal comes off easy as but the newer stuff is like rubber and a right pain to get off I ended up using the evil brush on my grinder for that stuff but then again I am bare metaling mine......

Removed the front seats, carpet, rubber floor mats etc.

Rons Resto RonsResto015

Then all the sound deadening.

Rons Resto RonsResto014

The bottom of the "A" posts and inner channels look good.

Rons Resto RonsResto012

Obviously a little water is getting in from somewhere on the n/s/f.

Rons Resto RonsResto011

Then out came the steering wheel and column.

Rons Resto RonsResto016

Then most of the dash bits and bobs.

Rons Resto RonsResto013

Thats it for today folks. Smile
