I was sent a quick steer kit with the beam - but they're LHD only. So thought about flipping it over, ut or various reasons it didn't work. Anyway - I thought back to when I first got the beam and the damper bracket was in the wrong place and she wouldn't turn fully right.... (which is the problem side).... so I had a cunning plan! I took the steering damper off my 71 Bug in the hope that it may have been ever so slightly shorter, which would have restricted the steering slightly and stopped the track rod hitting the shock... unfortunatly they were both exactly the same length... so that was that plan foiled..... but I had another idea (I'm on a roll here!).... if I was to take about 10mm out of the end of the steering damper it would have the same effect... hmmm..... So Steve got the grinder out and cut a chunk out for me, then I set about it with the welder! A few minutes later our creation was completed! So after waiting for it to cool down we fitted it - and hey presto - the damper stops the track rod hitting the shock by about 3mm!!!! Perhaps not the best way to do it, but hey - it works! And the best thing is that if I want more lock after the MOT, all I need to do it take the damper off and replace it with the new one I bought and just be carefull about hitting the shock on full lock! Then we spent another hour or so trying to get the windscreen to fit.... with with no success.... I dunno why she's being so difficult - I've fitted a Bug screen in the past and we did it in about 20 mins!

So this afternoon we removed it and replaced it... good job too! And adjusted the brakes as best as we could - we're going to get the garage to do them when she does in for MOT cos we dunno what we're doing! Just got to work out why the rockers are being difficult now. I'm hoping I don't have to replace the head! Still - there's not much left on the list now

| Yeah bizzarly the brakes were still working with it like that and it wasn't leaking or split! But (for obvious reasons) we didn't want to leave it like that so replaced it with a bit left over from when we did Joey's brakes.
Nope not long to go now till CTTP - but we're all on target! Just waiting for a few parts to turn up and for her to decide that she does actually want the windscreen!

| I've fitted quite a few windows and they usually only take 10-15 minutes. If Rach wasn't ready to pop I'd come up this week and lend a hand (she's not keen on me being too far away just incase she goes into labour). So after baby is born(he's due on wednesday), if you still haven't got it in, give me a shout. | |

| Cheers! Might have to take you up on that one. Didn't realise baby was due so soon, how exciting! Yeah normally they only take a couple mins each. We've put in loads of windows on various Dubs before and not had any trouble. We've even put one in another Bug before and that took less time than this and new metal was welded in in that time! | |

| She's being a bit of a madam today - nothing too unusual there! She won't let us adjust the brakes (apart from one) - but they do seem to stop the hub moving when you hold them by hand. On one side the handbrake seems to be working, but dubious on the other side. We've taken the steering apart again cos the box had migrated over towards the framehead. Hopefully it should stay put now! Taken my modified steering damper off to give it a lick of POR-15. Got my other rear light on and working. Now the other side won't work and has so far blown 2 fuses today and I can't get the brake lights working either.... Oh and now I have new pushrods - they're all the same length but she's still not letting me adjust them on no 1! | |

| Righty - today's work. Nothing particually interesting - but I took pics anyway! I replaced the driver's side gear gaiter as somehow the new one I put on when I refitted the gearbox had managed to split itself: Fitted the new fuel line at the back: Gotta put the line in at the front and add the filter. And adjusted the handbrake cables: Steve freed the stuck driver's quaterlight catch and we had another go at the valves with little sucess - we'll try again tomorrow. Adjusted the cluch cable too, so now she's ready to go back on her wheels | |

| Steve's parents have just come round and helped us fit the front screen - all it needed was a bit pressure on it from both sides and it went in without too much trouble! | |

| 'Man strength' in the form of Steve's Dad came down to help fit the windscreen - we've been having a lot of trouble fitting it (depite previously fitting a Bug screen and umpteeen other windows) - we would get one side it but as soon as we moved over to the other, it would pop out - we thought putting vaseline on it would help - but this just caused it to pop out with greater speeds - not good! Anyway, with Steve and Steve's Dad both keeping pressure on both sides of the screen, 5 mins later it was fitted! Then fitted the rest of the fuel pipes and the filter, connected up the stop tap and bolted the tank in: Pic of the quaterlight catch Steve fixed for me yesterday: And finally got both of her rear lights working (after blowing 8 fuses!): And brake lights: | |
