Big Plan now is to get it more original, spec wise, it is/was a 1500 , so im thinking get back to discs and original gearbox if I can find a good one.

Body is coming off, but will be leaving it half in situ to pop new channels in first, and repair sections of the boot floor and inner arches. This is what I will try to tackle first if I dont get sidetracked!!!

Be prepared for very slow progress, as we are saving for a wedding now so I can't take the piss lol!

Thought it best to see what state the roof was really in before I got too gung-ho.
Spent a bit of time this morning on it, Sunroof and mechanism, winders and runners are all out and removed.
Next step was to remove the headlining to see what state the rear water channel and drain holes were in - this was the bit I was dreading to be honest.
One side was fair, the other is mullered. Im really not sure what the next step I take will be, I'd love to save the sunroof aspect of the roof, but its going to need proper skills that I just dont have.
I didn't take a camera, but will pop some pics up soon.

The reason for my "I'm selling it" moment...

Crap pictures, soz, first pics are rear of drain channel and tube its that crusty all along, second pics are front drain channels.
The inner panel is braced onto the main shell roof in 3 places each side, and spot welded around the lip where the sunroof actually sits, tho these are plastered over with filler and rust.

Options are try to replicate original bit, seal it up and leave it manky, ragtop it, donor roof section and do away with sunroof - (it is england after all) or panic and sell it... Opinions are welcome...

My opinion would be take a deep breath, and try and get it fixed and stick with the steel slider. I am a big fan of them, you don't see many around these days.

It is a deep breath. Rich and Andy reckon the same, give it a ago, if its fucked I havnt lost owt, if it goes ok, cool as...

I'd like to keep it as is with the slider, so its just a case of chopping the inner section out, and getting busy. Im just a lazy fucker!!!

Nah, you couldn't see any of it till the headlining was out mate, but yeah that hole is supposed to drain down a tube, one on each side, comes out at a hole in the middle of the rear quarters, or was supposed to!!!

You should've bunged some lino in, easier to wipe up Wink

Well had a go at the roof earlier. Pics...

Nearside edge of drip channel...

68 Bug - Page 6 Jex069

Rear inner panel removed...

68 Bug - Page 6 Jex071

Roof grot...

68 Bug - Page 6 Jex077

Holes in roof, above the rotten inner areas. The main shell is pretty wafer thin in this area.

68 Bug - Page 6 Jex083

68 Bug - Page 6 Jex084

The sliding sunroof is no more. If i were to repair/replace the inner, there is no decent metal to rejoin it to, it was half shored up with filler, and the rear of the actual roof is thin and holed.
With the other repairs and things Im not happy with it makes sence to let someone who wants to ragtop it/roofchop a bug have the shell and me find a better one, so the shell is being stripped of anything that is of use to me and flogged.
