68 Bug Empty
PostSubject: 68 Bug   68 Bug EmptyMon Aug 31, 2009 7:17 pm

1968 Beetle, currently off the road, no mot.

Previously owned by our very own dubberatlast Carl, who did some good work on the bug, then passed it on.

It appears to have been somewhat neglected in this time, and has been subjected to certain parts being replaced/maintained in an amatuerish fashion (im being kind) to such an extent that I actually was surprised, and I've owned some shitters!!!

1600 engine fitted by previous owners as they seized Carls old 1200, exhaust loose, carb loose, shitty airfilter, fanbelt loose, fuelfilter leaking, wiring everywhere, no tinware, etc etc, havn't started on that, apart from refitting the decklid spring, as im gonna be spending a while under it I reckon.
Does start, after the batt was charged, but it didn't chance it for longer than 10 seconds. Replaced Pos terminal as was broken.
Exhaust removed as was too low, patched and sticking out too much for my liking, also the 4 into 1 flange is totally bent so would've blown like fuck anyway.

All tyres flat, back tyres bald, unable to inflate them due to ally valve caps corroding onto the valves, so not been checked in a while, as such couldn't get a jack under it without serious shenanigans.

Brakes drums all round, apparently snatching (no sniggering) to the left, not checked this yet, all brake lines look in good nick tho.

Gearbox undetermined as yet, the shifter is gonna have to go as my knees get in the way, need a shorter one, any recommendations?

Steel sliding sunroof, rotten and inoperative at the moment.

Interior mostly removed, as was mouldy, soaking wet, and covered in rotting maltesers and jelly babies, nice.

Wiring all over the shop, from numerous speakers, alarms, previous repairs, push button start, etc...

Lots of love needed on this one, I've killed a few bugs in my time so now its time to save one Very Happy

Big cheers to the old man for use of his driveway (my house has no parking at all) and his words of wisdom (scrap it!)

Only a couple pics, but you all know what it looks like, will get more when I have decent camera batteries!!!

Sam - yes I might keep this one, as I have reliable daily now so this is just for fun, takes a bit off the stress out of ownership when its not running as a daily...

Carl, the logbook states its a 1500 model, did it have a 1500 box in it when you had it do you know?

Spent most of yesterday messing about with wiring, as there was a lot of stuff just floating about under the bonnet.
Ripped loads out and replaced with the right colours going by a colour diagram off thesamba, and re routed it and labelled it as tidily as poss until I can replace it properly, replaced broken batt terminal, need a rubber grommet through body to starter as its bare metal rubbing on that wire.
Attempted rbuild of klaxon horn, but its was seized up and full of rusty water, works a bit now but labouring so replacing that too.

Did away with old fuel lines in engine bay, removed in line filter from above 009, will relocate this to under the tank, also removed one of those inlet manifold de-icing units to tidy things up a bit.

Okey stroky, cheers mate.

All lights/signals/wipers/horn working now apart from one bulb to replace and got to clean up the backing plate on a back light as its not earthing properly due to the rust I think, brake and light work individually, but not at the same time Question

Wiper spindles moving about a lot and parking under the screen so will have to tinker that.

Push button start ditched in place of original key, all working and turning over...

No fires yet Very Happy

Cheers man, just making the most of the light nights Cool
The jelly babies were tempting but the maltesers were too far gone, shame, but the goldfish in Parsons Snr's pond didn't seem fussed!

Noticed the US spec indicators fitted to the car at the rear that flash red are an MOT fail, any car after Sept 1st 65 must have amber indicator lights, another thing on the list... Seems to have got away with this for the last 15 years or so, or chummy forgot to swap em back over Suspect

Not yet buddy, I planned to, but there was no point yet, as I haven't got round to looking at the brakes, which he said was a problem...

Back tyres been changed as they were bald, popped some Slightly narrower ones on to keep sidewall more tucked from the arches.

What is this lowered on the back by, or did you just leave it as it was?

Pics at the weekend when it brightens up, in gonna confuse myself with tinware, heat risers and non existant heating systems, should be fun geek

Still waiting for heritage parcels!!!
Spent more time tidying & trimming the excess wiring in the engine bay.

Have one spark plug that wound out a helicoil, so going to gently remove and reinsert that..., fitted new decent leads, points, condenser, rotor. Will prob get an electronic ignition setup at some point.

Popped stud back in the mighty brosal 34, new gasket, all back on,

Removed knackered 4 into 1, one stud had no bolt on it, ooer i thought, yep just fell out so add that to list. Still on j tubes til can afford the exhangers.

Have ordered a cheapo turbo trip to tuck under the rear wing for al little more ground clearance, didn't want to get anything extravagant until I suss the engine isnt total garbage as may need the funds...

Chap on VZi has a complete golde steel sunroof for sale, been onto him for a week but can't contact so far but plugging away, he cant ignore cash forever.

Am buying camera batteries tody, so you can have a snapped stud rust and filler fix!
Oh and it leaks LIKE A SIEVE, the gutters that run doun the front quarters have been smoothed which my be causing...
