Made a start on the spring mount. Mocked it up on the car just to check all my measurements were right.
I changed my mind on where to mount the hair pins. I was gonna mount them to a bracket under the 'pan. But decided it would look cak as the lines won't flow. So they're now gonna bolt to a boss welded in the heater channel.

When it's bolted to just the 'pan, it does look out of proportion. But under the body it looks ok.
Most cars that run a drop tube axle would have a "flatter" spring because it would sit under the chassis. On a volksrod there's plenty of room for it.
I'll be removing some leaves to get a nice ride. But probably not as many as I first thought, as the front end weighs a ton now.

Had a fairly good day on the car today, with help from Rach and jack. Very Happy

We decided it was time to get the body off the spare pan and into the garage. So Rach helped me shunt the body a couple of feet down the pan then I just dragged it off. Surprising not as hard as I thought it would be considering I was pretty much on my own.... I really should have planned ahead and sorted some more help. Laughing

Body and 'pan separated
72 Hi Boy - Page 3 101_0464

Jack had a great time "fixing" it. And he thought the body was his new play house. Laughing

Got the good 'pan out of the garage and the body in ready to start. Cool

No that's cool mate. I do agree on just the pan it does not look right at all.
When I first bothed it on then stood back to take a look my first thought was Bollocks... Something aint right. But after measuring everything 5 times, it's exactly how I wanted it.

Razz Razz Razz He loves it. Saturday morning he had a propper spazz cos he wanted to "work" on it. I had to give in in the end and spent an hour in the garage with him. Razz

No actual progress to report on though. It's gonna go on the back burner for a couple of weeks while I get the CTTP trophies hammered out.

I think I've decided that it'll get some scratch built front quarter panels. (next job on the list) They need a lower repair and I wanna modify them a little, so figure starting from scratch will be quicker.

All other projects are now out of the way, so work can start on the 'rod again.

Had a bit of a change of plan with this, and going in a slightly different direction. New plan is a roadster pickup. Something similar to this:

72 Hi Boy - Page 3 HEB-LOW-RES

So I started hacking the body to bits.

72 Hi Boy - Page 3 101_0530-1
72 Hi Boy - Page 3 101_0531-1

No going back now. It'll be a lot of work to make it sedan again! Laughing

Had a bit of a bargain on ebay, with tyres for the rear. Proper oldskool hot rod style. They're fooking huge! afro
72 Hi Boy - Page 3 101_0535-1

They're never gonna fit stock 4.5J rims, So I cut a couple in half ready to band them. I think 7"... It usually does the job! Razz

1 pair of steels banded!
While I was there I thought I'd fill the holes to make them smooth.
Just need a clean and some paint and they're ready for tyres.

Lovely bit of welding on them steels mate. Did you do the banding yourself? I want a set of banded steels for the golf but refuse to pay the likes of 'Wide wheels' £350 to do it.

Thanks mate, they're all my own work.

I could probably do you a set for a lot less than that! Wink
Plus I'd TIG weld them rather than MIG. TIG's a lot stronger weld.

How did you cut and weld them true? Did you make up a rig or do it all by hand? My only concern with Banded steels on my golf is that i dont know how much vibration there would be at over 100mph. They would be ideal for shows and slow speed cruising though

No fancy equipment, all done by hand the old skool way... Keep measuring and checking for square every step of the way.

I know some people aren't keen on banded wheels, but I'm more than confident my wheels will take any amount of abuse thrown at them... And I'm thinking maybe an engine swap may eventually be on the cards. Putting a lot of horsepower through them.
