| Griff, what sort of journey are you doing in the Van?
If the compressions good, and you've no oil in the water and no water in the oil, then I would say it's caused through short trips, I get it in my Octavia, when it's not driven far. | |

| the vans not been moved or started since mid september, i did the the compression test yesterday, it started fine but after 5 minutes was smoking loads so turned the van round on the drive and stripped it. usually it is just short trips round weston, and at weekends we go out in for the day, but that shit appeared after driving down to dorset. it did use a lot of oil anyway, so i stuck a bottle of wynns stop smoke in it, that did what it said on the label, stopped it smoking, for a bit then would smoke loads after a month.

| Griff, a couple of questions:
Has the problem with hot running/head gaskets been sorted since you flushed out the van. Do you have any COLD spots on any of the pipes or any part of the radiator? (just scanned through your thread again)
When you say it's smoking, is it Blue or Black? Is it smoking all the time, even on tickover? Does it tickover ok? Does it run rough? Does it struggle at any speed when out on the road? Is it using a lot of fuel?
Just wondering if the carb (I assume it's not a fuel pump) is pumping too much fuel in. Sooting up the plugs.
If your compressions up and around the same on all four pots, then I wouldn't expect it to be Rings.
Has anyone suggested Valve Stem Oil Seals in the heads?, allowing oil back into the Valves. Fords used to suffer this. Have you had the valve covers off and checked the top end?
Not sure what else to suggest to help.

| Hi Guys, should Griffs water jacket be that colour????????? Looks nasty, and if that stuffs in the Rad and heater matrix as well, mmmmmm.
Griff have you tried heating the piston up, as you try to pull the pin out? it may help, just don't direct the heat at the pin.
Is that swarf in the last picture?
Any wear marks in the bores? (all the rings loose in the pistons)
Good pictures though. | |

| he put the wrong type of antifreeze in it ....its cleaned up ok ,or rather it will ,i have made him a tool and the gudeon pin is now out .....awkward design tho' pistons and bores look fine , the bits in the pic are just carbon off the top of the piston having said that the edge of the pistons have scratches above the rings ....so i'm presuming this will be ok | |

| this engine had been out of a van and sat in my shed for 18 months. i only but it back in my van when i cooked the orignal engine last may, so the rad and matrix and pipework is not in the same condition as this block. also on taking it apart it is apparant this motor has been taken apart before now, so a bit worried about one of the head studs as it is not screwed in as far as the rest and a bit of an angle too. i'll post more pictures later. the dodgey stud nomates tool in action bare block ready for a clean up

| We have got a similar window situation- was it tricky to fit the new one? it is delaying all work at the mo because the window is leaking and don't want it to wreck the new interior?!! also- any idea where best to fit seat belts on a converted panal van?
sorry for all the questions
cheers
ps- the van is looking good by the way!! |

| roadster as steve said it all cleaned up ok, so i'm hoping cheers for the tool steve alfies bus, which window do you have to change, they were not to bad but my window rubbers have shrunk and still let water in, i have gaffa taped over the gap at the moment as my van has more pressing issues to waste my money. the seat belt mounting points are not there in a panel van , but you will have the indents where they should be for the the two lower points but not the upper ones as a different panel is used to the caravelle. | |

| these engines are prone to weaping water around the heads due to corrosion of the water jacket.

| well, last night i was cleaning some of the parts off of this engine and found some broken windscreen glass in the engine cradle this is not the engine i thought it was, this engine came from a breakers yard from a 85/86 van about 7 years ago to get all the water pipes and anncilleries from this engine was sat for years in my shed which may explain the poor condition of the internals. so outside of my shed under a tarpaulin is the engine from the italian left hooker i broke up a few years ago, which was a 1990 caravelle. so i am going to get that one in the shed aswell and pull that one apart to see what that is like inside and hopefully use that block. | |
