| all back in and running, one small water weep, needs a new o ring that didn't come in the kit.
and my running problems of the last two days, some donkeys cock has took all the hydraulic followers out and replaced them with solid followers, i was setting the rockers as per instructions for the hydraulic followers which was lifting the valves off the seats. now set as per an aircooled engine and ticking over sweet.
taxing it tomorrow and then out for a test drive, if all ok going to drain the water, replace the o ring with a new one, torque the head bolts and reset the valves.

ok scoops will be jealous, had to make a washer today on the lathe so i came home to fit the new bush that nomates made, to replace the pile of washers that was in there when i took it apart. drained the oil as i have done a couple of hundred miles in it now, ready for fresh oil and filter. drained the coolant aswell to refill with the correct spec stuff. borrowed nomates new torque wrench to check the head bolts, fitted the bush, checked the rest of the head nuts with torque wrench all took a fair bit more so checked the otherside, all took a bit more, the last one was a bit tight for space to turn the wrench only getting 3 or 4 clicks on the ratchet. but was going slowly, then i noticed the head of the nut turning back on its own, lifted out the wrench and then it happened, the stud snapped shooting out the block so its stripped again on the drive way head off, but no chance of getting to the snapped bit as it broke so far down its pistons and liners out to get too. and then if i can get anything on it as its an edge one (number 8 in the tighten sequence) to unscrew it from the block.

| when you feel like you should have stayed in bed, and would have achieved more than i had yesterday. i should have known when, the first job was going wrong, looking for the empty oil can, to drain the old engine oil into. could not find it anywhere so used an empty 5 litre cider container. i lifted of the engine hatch to see this it must have fell in there last thursday down at burnham, the oil warning lamp came on, so i checked the oil, topped it up. i had the bed propped up and the engine hatch wedged under that it must have fell in then from then on the day just went down hill rapidly this morning engine bay prior to oil change looking rather clean i got pissed off with it later so no pics of it in pieces, i'll get some more tomorrow taking out the farm stick it on the ramp and drop the engine out to swap it for the other one . | |

| engine swap over must have been ok, have done a few thousand miles since may with no major problems from that end. front suspension bushes have started squeaking, next job may be sort steering and then polybush kit with new springs and dampers.
maybe one year get that hole behind the sliding door mech sorted.

| major development, theres a TWUNT WORKING AT VW.
the dash lights stopped working a month or so ago, then started working again and now its dark real early they have stopped working again. so on saturday i checked the fuses, all ok. i changed the switch still nothing, took the dash apart tested the circuit board, it works fine on the bench? today i brought one of those high tech testers ( a sharp pointy thing with a bulb in it a nd a wire with a croc clip), took the the dash apart again took the radio out i took the central part of the heater blower out and i used the that new tester live coming out the switch on the grey with a blue stripe, i followed it untill it went in to a bunch of wires prodding it, still live. i split that big bunch of wires open found my wire, prodded it some more still live. i'm thinking to myself getting near the fuse box now, but i know every one of them fuses is good, i pulled each one out and tested it? yep my wire went to that fuse box, but not to the row of 12 fuses, no some cunt at vw thought it was a good idea to put the dash lights on a seperate fuse and clip it to the top of the relay panel, that cannot be seen unless you lie up side down in the seat with your head on the floor. 2 hours too put that lot back in again.
dash lights work now and the cigarette lighter too, as i found the plug for that not connected to anything.

yep, was that cigarette lighter plug. fucking window still leaks though, the only reason it is only an inch deep is that it runs out the door step at that depth. going to order a new rubber for it, and get some sealant too with it.

| had a small dash fire last week, turned out to be the dimmer switch for the the dash lights was knackered, aand when i put it back in it was not on maximum brightness, so when i went out in the dark for the first time after refitting it, hmm dash lights aren't very bright, i roll the thumb wheel round to maxmium dash lights up a good'un. i get from my house to worle bp garage thinking to myself feck me someones having a proper good bonfire that fucking stink, PANIC its inside and its my dash board billowing smoke out i turned the lights off and pulled the battery terminals off, figured out it was the switch so carried on down to the takeway with no lights on. switch replaced seems ok now. none of the wiring loom looks affected just the switch luckily. | |
