| Ive cut the cage into 3 sections now. I researched where im allowed to cut to keep it in compliance. So fitting it should be fairly straight foward now..... i hope! | |

| So..... fitted new Clutch, flywheel, bearing, and an O2J 5 speed gearbox from a Golf V5. (aparantly the ratio's are better?!) Lifted the engine into the engine bay The oil filter housing and cooler needed to be removed as it fouled the front engine mount, so i need to work out how im going to fit it back on with enough clearance, or maybe modify the engine mount? | |

| So not sure if anybody is that interested in this build as its not very fitting with the forum, but as its the only build thread ive got going i may aswell keep it going if thats ok with people?! Had a busy weekend. After a lot of measuring, swearing, cut knuckles, and a smashed windscreen, we got the 3 cut sections of cage into the car. Spend ages getting it all to sit right by using loads of rachet straps and blocks of wood to hold it together. Marked where the mountings attach to the body and welded in some re-inforced pates, tacked the cage in place, re-measured and adjusted where necessary. Once we were 100% happy i got dad to work his magic and weld the cage in. I have a pic of the cage tacked in place but not fully welded. It was dark when we finished last night so didnt get any finished pics. I need to clean a few welds up, the rub down the cage and inside of the car which will then be painted Metallic Grey to match engine bay. | |

You got any pics of the engine bay before you started to rearrange it after your mates attempts?

The Corrado uses a Steel panel sunroof (instead of glass panel) so ive removed all the sliders and mech and will weld the panel in, then seal around the edge. I was going to use a fibreglass panel but the regs state it needs to be metal. A lot of people just rivet a sheet of Aluminium over the roof hole, but i personally think it looks messy -In the previous picture its hard to tell how the sunroof will fit. A section of the sunroof underside will need removing in order to clear the top cross bar of the cage.

| The alloy plate may look messy, but a lot less chance of warping the roof from the mig!
Saying that, this is SiABT, so I know it will be a good job either way.

| I thought i'd try my luck and see if the Mk4 Golf V6 4 motion downpipe would fit without any modifications..... it didnt. Its not that far off, but it doesnt clear the steering joint that comes through the bulkhead. So i will be making up a complete new downpipe soon. I was also having issues with the driveshafts, the previous owner had beaten the sh!t out of the out CV's and had buggered up the thread, i tried cutting a new thread and bought some new hub nuts but it wasnt looking good. So my cousin Matt (Maltloaf on here) came to the rescue with some Mk4 Golf 1.8t driveshafts left over from his mk2 Golf 1.8T conversion. In theory they should'v fitted straight on as ive used the Mk4 Golf V5 gearbox which has 106mm gearbox flanges (instead of VR6 100mm). The shorter shaft fitted straight on with no drama, but the longer shaft is about 1" too long. So i will use the Corrado shaft but swap the CV's over. Hopefully that will work? Ive also made up a list of things i need to buy..... kinda wish i hadnt now with xmas looming closer its expense i could do without. - Mk4 Golf Flyby wire Throttle Pedal and Loom - Corrado VR6 front engine mount - Corrado VR6 Speedo / Clocks and loom - x2 Corrado seats (i need the subframes from them as they sit lower than other VW's) - 288mm Front brake Discs - Corrado VR6 Front Brake Calipers and Pads - New Windscreen (smashed old one whilst fitting cage) - Complete Exhaust - Mirrors - Door handles - Front indicators - VR6 oil cooler sandwich plate - External Oil cooler - Radiator and fans - Headlight Looms - Battery and length of cables to relocate in boot - Interior Heater and ducting ..... And thats what i can think of at the moment. Sure there will be plenty more. | |

| Another shameful picture-less update Had a bit of a result today, took a trip to my mates VW Breaker (Volksmania in Avonmouth) and blagged a passenger side driveshaft, 288mm Brake Discs and Calipers for free! ....Useful friends! I also fitted some new front wheel bearings, track rod ends, and ball joints and then fitted up the Brakes on one side. I am on the look out for a set of braided lines, i did bid on some on Ebay last week but got out bid in the last minute by 50p without realising. Oh well, its getting there slowely..... its 1st race day Saturday 28th April so i need to get cracking!!! | |
