PostSubject: Bob is not well!   Bob is not well! EmptySat Oct 28, 2006 6:51 pm

I was driving home down the motorway when there was a large bang pale and the generator light came on, I managed to get him the 8 miles home with a very nasty smell of burning rubber and popped the boot to see what was wrong, after the smoke had cleared ( and this took 25 minutes!)this is what I have found No

Bugger Exclamation I will have to check if the belt has just snapped or if the dynamo has seized up, I must admit he did sound a bit rattly after that on accleratiion but was quiet if staying constant or decelerating?

Has anybody else every done this?

Any advice on how to proceed would be grateful!! Rolling Eyes

The best thing to do i think mate is get a new belt and dynamo put it all on then give it ago you have nothing to loose if you need a dynamo i have a spare here but 8 miles with no belt is not good for any aircooled motor

Bugger not good affraid Does it turn over alright or even start chances you could be lucky and got away with it, but 8 miles is a long way with no cooling.

If it turns over get it running but not for long with no cooling just so you can tell what the motors like.

Fingers crossed for you dude let us know what you find if you need a hand give use a shout i'll prob be passing WSM tomorrow if you need me...

Nah. not yet, I had to work today so I will try and have a look tomorrow night, the only problem is the bloody dark, it is hard to do anything when you can't see your hand in front of your face. No

If the dynamo is shot would this be the best time for an alternator conversion? Also are they difficult to do Question

Good idea Smile

No not very hard ... swap over the units, remove the regulator under back seat & connect a few wires where the regulator was!

Found this thread on Vzi for u with a few links for more info
http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=277823&highlight=alternator+conversion

Enjoy lol!

if u need to get a new dynamo then u might as well change to alternator. i changed all my beetles to alternator and its great Very Happy the conversion is easy as rick said just make sure u remove the regulator under the seat as its built in to the alternator.

OK, I fitted the new belt, topped up the oil and he fired into life Laughing The only difference I can tell from before is that it won't tick over, it just stalls everytime you stop.

As far as engine rattles I can't hear anything over the rattles inside the car and the exhaust so next time every meets you guys can have a listen and give me a verdict afro

Is yours sorted now Carl? Will you be at the next meet?

I think I have sorted the tickover problem, the gap on the points was nearly closed and the electric choke was sticking, it is still not perfect but is 10 times better than it was Laughing

The new rear drums and the alternator kit arrived today so I will try and fit them next week as I have the week off sunny

If I do get stuck would anyone be able to lend me a hand Question Question
