And now for my new steering wheel! You'll maybe remember that I got this new one for my birthday back in January from my wife after she had consulted with Mr Scoops! Good work to the both of you, I think it looks brilliant now I finally got round to fitting it this afternoon!

It is back on the road now.. I drove it to work last Friday....

I still have a new exhaust (well, Scoops' old one) and some heat exchangers to fit... and I have some chrome baby moons I bought last week at VoWo to put on - I think they would look better on white wheels so they may have to wait till after CTTP!

Today's work

1) paint heat exchangers...

I bought them in this condition.. these are OG heat exchangers, so worth the extra money and a bit of TLC...

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC00908

Wire brushed them all over...

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC00909

and gave them a lick of paint with some high temperature exhaust manifold paint.

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC00910

2) Fitted a nice shiny new door mirror

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC00911

Got to do the other heat exchanger and door mirror tomorrow... once the heat exchangers are done, I should be ready to fit my exhaust.... watch this space....

Engine out!! it was easier to get out than I expected!

Should get that broken exhaust bolt out in the next few days... going to change all the usual service items while its out and nice and easy and clean all the tin ware - looks like it's been a long time since anyone has...

Need to get some new rear engine mounts too.. one was completely broken when I took the engine out...

I welded (arc) a nut on the end of the remaining stub and wound it straight out...

Now going to do all the usual service items, plugs etc on the engine while it is out, and then hopefully next weekend, I'll be rolling again!!

Right then, more pictures!!

You've seen the heat exchangers I bought and painted.. well, once I got round to fitting these, and the BugPack exhaust purchased from Mr Scoops, I ran into trouble... A bolt which was holding the J-Tube to the head, which should have been a stud(!) snapped off Sad

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01031

To get this out, I ended up taking the engine out of the bus, welding a nut on the end - out it came.... phew!

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01034

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01032

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01030

I did a few other jobs while the engine was out:

fitted new spark plugs
fitted new HT leads
fitted new inline fuel filter
adjusted the valve clearances
cleaned down all the tinware of acculated grease and grime
fitted new engine mounts on the cross beam - one of them was completely fooked when i took the engine out...

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01038

While the engine was out I inspected the CV boots.. the offside had a large split in it - so with MOT pending next saturday I took the opportunity to fix this and fit a new boot.... pardon my french, but what a c*#t of a job this is!! getting the CV joint off of the driveshaft splines was unbelievably hard - if you are going to attempt this, undo both ends of the driveshaft, take it out and work on it on a bench, DON'T TRY TO DO IT ON THE VEHICLE would be my advice... anyway got it all back together:

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01033

the other thing to watch out for when doing this job... I bought a complete kit, but the cap bolts were much longer than what were fitted to the vehicle - too long in fact so I ended up re-using what was originally in situ.. so you probably don't need for fork out for a whole kit, just buy the boot and grease..

With all that done, It was time to put the engine back in... definitely a two man job - did try it on my own to start with and quickly thought better of it!!

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01039

With the engine back in, I fitted a new oil strainer and sump plate - got one of those with a central drainage bolt...

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01040

and put new Morris oil in...

Put it all the tinware back on the bus and hey presto!

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01041

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01042

I have bought a few other things for my bus too recently...

retracting inertia seatbelts - mainly so I can fit the rear facing baby seat in the front.. I had to get a T4 front seat belt for the passenger side - the T2 belts are not nearly long enough!

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01037

and just to be on the safe side, I've bought a fire extinguisher too..

Shorty's '71 Early Bay - Page 2 DSC01036

That's about it for now.... MOT next saturday so got a few little things to do including horn and windscreen washers...

Also, watch this space to see what I'm going to do with my wheels!!

Very Happy
