PostSubject: Tango Van - 1972 westy..   Sat Apr 28, 2007 10:00 pm

hi all,

the cttp was awesome and made me want to get tango back on the road for the summer!

So today, finally got around to dropping out the engine to get at the fuel tank and find out how big the hole was that it failed the mot on!

I've posted a few pics up here with the aim to keep a record of the project

http://www.richasykes.co.uk

and will get some up here asap also.

As usual forgot to take pics untill half way through, but then not sure how I was going to whislt holding onto the engine and jacking up the van Question lol

The tank has a small hole so any ideas of where to get a decent replacement and which type of the two versions it is?

PostSubject: update - October 2007 - the stripdown   Wed Oct 24, 2007 8:21 pm

Van soon off to be cut up and new panels welded in - all arches, front clip, rear corners, sills jacking points etc. basically the bottom 6 inches!

here's some pics of the fun.

All that is left is too strip the rest of the cab area out - seats, carpet and any electrics.

I was the guy that took it out on a very cold day!

update:

had a baby girl on 21/11/07, so we've had our hands full!

Van picked up just before Christmas and towed off to a workshop back home in Cornwall.

All panels bought to replace the bottom 6 inches and the front clip. Going to convert it to the early bay round bumpers, low indicators and early front arches.

new paint vw dove blue to the top and dash, and then a pastel white roof, bumpers and inside.

new rubbers to go in all round and looking to lightly tint the side and rear glass (any ideas of where to send the glass?)

Should be back by Easter for the refit of electrics, engine and interior.

In the mean time: need to take a peek at the engine...

Smile

PostSubject: Front facelift!   Sun Feb 24, 2008 9:58 pm

Spent the week in Cornwall working on the van.

Converting the van to lowlight indicators and round bumpers, as it is a x-over model anyhow.

So after chopping out N/S inner and outer arch and welding in early flat lip arch and new inner (and bottom of B-post which had rotted away.)

Then removed old deformation panel (behind front bumper) and front panel. This revealed more of the crusty stuff which needed some TLC, the redhot edge of my grinder and some lovely fresh metal!

here's some pics of the progress thus far

Going down this coming weekend to do some more cutting and welding. The front is completed now, all welded on and tidied up. O/S arch inner and outer should be done when i get there, so will give a hand sorting out the sills and rear!

saw these for sale and look tempting ....

far cheaper than anywhere else and they don't rust!
