for a good home fire ?

After many years, I have finaly my fire in the lounge but it is a bit smoky and a bit is an understatement

The wood has been siting outside for a couple of years so it's hard to get it going but once it is on it's lovely

Any tips to get it started and keep it going?


I've never been so excited about getting leaflets thru the door ... so I can burn them shame they use the shiny paper type tho.

deisel and old engine oil ....trickled onto the wood should ,enhance the effects

Have you had the chimney swept?? I would say that is the first thing to do.
You need to make sure the chimney 'draw's properly, ie it pulls the smoke up the chimney properly.
I have lit the woodburner tonight. It's lovely and toasty here at Chez Scoops!!

You must get the chimeny swept.

you should do a smoke test to see if the chimney is A in tact and B pulls well

your old boiler would of had a liner taking the fumes away (the metal tube thing the bloke went on the roof for)

because it was lined it would not show any defect in the cement joints ,now the liner is gone ,the chimney can be proved to be safe by smoke bombing it (ask wurz,he likes smoke bombs)

as scoops states you should also get it swept (not expensive ,but getting harder to find somone to do this)

it is acceptable for a chimney to 'spill' fumes before its warmed a little ....so be careful what you use to start it ,as you could fill the room with smoke ...

so get it swept and smoke bombed ....also check the guy that removed the liner put a chimney pot on !!......if you have no suitable terminal such as a pot on the chimney, the weather WILL damage the top course of bricks and cause serious damage to the property and anyone below ....
